Tom Harty is the President/Chief Operating Officer of Meredith Corporation, where he oversees Meredith’s National and Local Media Groups, and reports directly to Meredith Chairman and CEO Steve Lacy.

Harty most recently served as the President of Meredith’s National Media Group and was responsible for all National Media Group activities around the country. He oversaw an extensive portfolio of media properties including brands such as Better Homes and Gardens, Parents and Family Circle.  Prior to August 2010, Harty was the President of Consumer Magazines and the Chief Revenue Officer.

Harty has been a major contributor to the success of the National Media Group since joining Meredith in 2004. He has played a key leadership role in increasing Meredith’s connection to the American consumer through growth in magazine audience and online traffic, and spurred expansion into emerging new consumer platforms. Under Harty’s leadership, Meredith has consistently increased its share of advertising revenues against its competitive set. He created the innovative Meredith Sales Guarantee, which proves that advertising on Meredith’s media platforms directly leads to an increase of product sales at retail. It has subsequently been adopted across the industry. He also led an expansion of Meredith’s digital initiatives—including the acquisition of, the world’s largest food site—and spearheaded expansion of Meredith’s high-margin brand licensing business, which includes Better Homes and Gardens products at Walmart and a partnership with Realogy to create the Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Network.

Additionally, under Harty’s leadership, the National Media Group has increased its share of magazine industry advertising revenues for five consecutive years to an all-time high of 12.3 percent, which led to Meredith being named the No. 1 rated Media Company in 2010 by Advertiser Perceptions.

Prior to joining Meredith, Harty served as Senior Vice President, General Manager for The Golf Digest Companies, a division of Advance Magazines. He was responsible for the financial management, circulation, advertising and business development for the division’s four titles, including the highly regarded Golf Digest magazine.

His broad publishing experience includes key leadership positions with several of the industry’s largest publications including TV Guide, where he served as Vice President and Publisher for the 9 million circulation title; and Reader’s Digest, where he was Advertising Director for the 11 million circulation title. In addition, he has held key business positions with New York Times Company, Forbes and Gruner & Jahr USA. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of the Magazine Publishers of America.

Harty holds an MBA from Iona College and a BS in Business Administration from Castleton University. He resides in Greenwich, Conn. with his family.
