November 2012

Kate WhiteKate White was a keynote speaker at the Annual Student Career Conference on Nov. 17, 2012. She is the author of I Shouldn't Be Telling You This: Success Secrets Every Gutsy Girl Should Know and the Bailey Weggins mystery series, and has been the editor-in-chief of five major magazines, including Cosmopolitan.

For every gutsy girl "Be multitalented. Today young editors don't just write and edit for the magazine, they write for the publication's website, set up luncheons, appear on TV, and so much more. It's important that you prepare yourself by becoming tech savvy or taking a public-speaking class, for instance. And be ready to pivot if your employer needs you to focus on one skill more than another."

How to land a job "As I've been promoting my new career book, I've asked every young woman how she got her job and the answer is always the same: through a connection. You don't have to be the kid of someone famous or rich or super successful. Use Network like crazy and then FOLLOW UP. Go to career talks and approach the speaker to form a connection. Think of it as a career campaign, not a career search. Be a ruthless campaigner."

Moving on "It's important to recognize when a job has run its course. I'd been at Cosmo for 14 years and, though I loved it, I was ready for a change. Plus, I wanted to try something new and fun while I still had the chance."

Cosmo takeaway "Guys want sex far more than we could ever imagine."

Why communications matters "I asked a woman who recently received a big promotion how it came to be. She said, 'I read your book, and it gave me the idea and motivation.' I love that something I published as either a writer or editor helped someone. I know that at Cosmo, we made a difference for many women."
