New York, April 11, 2005 – New York Women in Communications, Inc. (NYWICI) honored today the 2005 Matrix Award winners at a luncheon held at The Waldorf Astoria Grand Ballroom. The awards acknowledged outstanding women who have distinguished themselves in the fields of advertising, arts and entertainment, books, broadcasting, magazines, newspapers, online media and public relations. The 2005 Matrix Awards’ 35th anniversary event was hosted by The New York Times.
“Each year at the Matrix Awards, we celebrate Woman Who Change the World,” said Jyll Holzman, senior vice president of advertising, The New York Times, and president, NYWICI. “This year’s Matrix Awards winners are women who are changing their industries as well as the world. They are not only making magazines, newspapers or movies, they’re making new opportunities for women everywhere. They are making history.”
Also at the Matrix luncheon, the NYWICI Foundation, now in its fifth year, announced the names of 16 scholarship winners, for a total of $100,000–a record high–to talented women pursuing careers in the communications industry. “We are committed to changing lives with scholarships, through internships, mentoring and special opportunities,” explained Joannie C. Danielides, president, Danielides Communications, Inc. and president, NYWICI Foundation.
Awarded this year were two memorial scholarships, The Glamour Ruth Whitney Scholarship, named after Glamour magazine’s legendary editor and past Matrix winner, and the Judy Corman Memorial Scholarship and Internship established by Scholastic, the global children’s publisher and entertainment company, in memory of the public relations veteran and former Matrix winner who helped make Harry Potter a household name.
