About Viruses
NYWICI acknowledges that there are currently a wide variety of very harmful "viruses", "Trojan horses" and "worms" that are circulating on the Internet. The overwhelming majority of these viruses are disseminated through email. Many of these viruses capture addresses from an infected user's address book and replicate infected messages that appear to be from a familiar source. Infected email is no longer limited to attachments
any email message has the potential to be viral even if it appears to be from a recognized source.
Many virus perpetrators scan Websites on the Internet using "robots", "web crawlers", or "web bots" and capture email addresses from publicly published content on the site. These addresses are then in turn used to disseminate virus-laden email. This practice of capturing public email addresses is also used by "spammers" and "junk emailers."
Whereas NYWICI is an organization dedicated to networking and the free exchange and use of email addresses among members is of paramount importance, we recommend that if you have any concerns about privacy, spam or viruses, you
do not publish your email address on this site in any of the public forums which include, but are not limited to, Member News, Job Bulletin, Message Boards, Internship listings, or any other public area or searchable databases (including the password-protected Membership Directory).
Submission of your email address on any of the registration or content submission forms which is required for identification validation purposes only
is not publicly published content and cannot normally be reached by such virus perpetrators. All such form submissions are secure.
Many Websites use technology that employs "malicious scripts" that try to modify or change your system configurations when the page is loaded. NYWICI.org does not employ
any such scripting in any manner and there is nothing included in the technology of this site that should affect your system in any manner other than the normal operations of a Website.
If you have any doubts about security or performance of your own system, we recommend that you use the most recent version/revision of your operating system as well as your web browser and email client. Each manufacturer of such components provides various "patches" for a variety of their system's anomalies and you should always ensure that you have downloaded and installed the most current patch for your level of technology. NYWICI.org does not provide any further support on any such technology and you should contact the respective manufacturer directly.
NYWICI.org strongly recommends that you also purchase, install, and use a virus detection program daily. You should scan your entire system automatically each day and install automatic email virus protection for both incoming and outgoing email. We also recommend that you be cautious of any email that appears suspect, even from a familiar source, and delete it immediately without either previewing or reading the messageboth activities could potentially trigger an infection.
One of the most comprehensive and robust virus detection programs is
Norton AntiVirus 2003. They also provide an excellent knowledge-base about viruses and various protection strategies. You can learn more about this inexpensive product at the Symantec Website:
www.symantec.com
Bear in mind that any virus detection program only detects yesterday's virusesones that have been circulating around long enough for the protection engineers to dissect them and provide an antidote. You are always subject to the risk of attack as new viruses proliferate. Therefore, you must be very diligent in how you protect your own resources. Do not rely on your virus detector alone. A few other recommendations that can help you protect your system:
1. Disseminate and use your email address sparingly.
2. Refrain from including your address in bulk humor or political lists.
3. Set up a second address for message groups or commercial submissions.
4. Change your email addresses periodically.
5. Use MSN HotMail or any other temporary address system as an alias when you travel or login from a foreign location or a cybercafe (forward your normal email to that temporary address or alias).
6. Do not store any email messages in your email client or browser. This will be the first component to fail when hit with a virus, and
you will permanently loose all you email. Store all messages offline, preferably off system, on a virus-free CD-ROM.
7. Update your virus definition files daily. This can be done automatically through your virus detection program and will keep you as protected as possible against the currently recognized viruses.
