Ladies Who Laugh
Wednesday, July 22, 2009

The New York Women in Communications Foundation invites you to spend an evening with the rising stars of comedy — performing on the same stage that launched legendary ladies who laugh — like Tina, Gilda, Lily and Amy!

Featuring Advertising Legend and Funny Lady Linda Kaplan Thaler as emcee!

...and your warm-up host, New York Women in Communications Staff Director, Holly Koenig!

Gina Brillon

Ms. Brillon's comedy, which has graced the stages of The Comic Strip, Boston Comedy Club, and Carolines, is the perfect blend of personal experiences, growing up racially mixed (Puerto Rican, Italian, American), and sex therapy (she studied sex therapy before and during her stand-up career). She has been featured on Comedy Central several times including "New Faces of Comedy" and "Live at Gotham." She's been featured in both "Latina" magazine and as a fashion commentator for "Life and Style." Livetheatregang.com raves that Ms. Brillon "Reminded us that Whoopi Goldberg was not the last funny female to hit the NYC comedy scene."

Helen Hong

Helen Hong’s “cute little Asian girl” demeanor leaves audiences totally unprepared for her naughty and irreverent material. From amorous trees to racist fashion labels to how she got her un-sexy first name, Helen’s mischievous point of view is always a crowd favorite. Her enthusiastic character impressions have landed her on E! Entertainment, TLC, ImaginAsian TV, and national commercials for Comcast and Xerox.

A rising star in the NY comedy scene, Helen was a semi-finalist in the 2008 and 2007 NY’s Funniest Stand-Up Competition and was featured in the NYC Underground Comedy Festival. She was also a semi-finalist in the 2006 California’s Funniest Female Contest. Before her career in comedy, Helen was a successful TV director/producer, and was featured behind the scenes on TLC’s “What Not to Wear.” She loves karaoke, NPR, and cheese.

Nancy Lombardo
One of the most sought after talents in New York and across the country, this award-winning comedian, writer and comedy coach has performed with the likes of Robin Williams and Bruce Willis and has consulted on John Leguizamo's Off-Broadway hit "Mambo Mouth." A member of the legendary Friar's Club, Nancy has been featured as a writer and performer on radio, network and cable television, including Comedy Tonight, Nickelodeon and the Comedy Channel.

Alexandra McHale
Ms. McHale made her network debut on NBC's "The Tonight Show" with Jay Leno. She's also been seen on CBS's "The Late Late Show" with Craig Kilborn, Comedy Central's "Premium Blend" and "New Joke City" with Robert Klein on the Metro Channel. Ms. McHale is a lifetime member of the renowned Actors' Studio and has studied with acting greats such as Paul Newman, Sally Field and Ellen Burstyn. After Ms. McHale's appearance at the Montreal Just For Laughs Comedy Festival, "The Hollywood Reporter" cited Alexandra as one to watch "who scored points with quick barbs."

Liz Miele
Turning heads by age 18 with a profile in the humor issue of "The New Yorker" magazine, Ms. Miele is now a "veteran" at only 23. A regular at the best clubs in NYC (Carolines, Gotham and Comic Strip Live), Ms. Miele tackles such topics as interracial dating, fear of walking home alone, and mental illness in her family with a sarcastic wit and youthful charm. She was recently featured on Comedy Central's "Live at Gotham," and has also appeared on "The Late Show," "The Daily Show" and The WE Network. Ms. Miele was the winner of the 2008 Gilda's Club Comedy contest.

Premium Discounts for Disability and Long Term Care Insurance for NYWICI Members and Their Families

Most people understand the importance of  homeowner’s or renter’s insurance to protect belongings — theirs or a neighbor’s — should something go wrong in their home or apartment, like a leak, fire, or falling tree that crashes through a roof.

In addition, with disability or long term care insurance, you can protect your savings in other ways. Ask yourself these questions:

Do you know for sure whether you are sufficiently covered by disability insurance

• How will you pay the rent, maintenance or mortgage if you’re severely injured or become ill for a stretch of time?
• How long will your employer pay your salary until you are back on your feet and at work?

What do you know about long term care insurance? Did you know that…

• Most home care recipients are women and 72 percent of nursing home residents are, you guessed it, women.
• Women live longer and are more likely to need long-term care.
• Women are more likely to provide care for others and understand why it’s not desirable to rely on family or friends for their care.
• The cost of care can be prohibitive.

Even if you work at a corporation, you will want to learn more about these insurance options. New York Women in Communications members are eligible for premium discounts at a top-of-the line insurer.
