Online Scholarship Application

The New York Women in Communications Foundation welcomes qualified candidates to apply for our annual scholarships. In addition to our general scholarships, we also present named scholarships each year, some of which come with internships.

The application period for the 2012 Scholarships has closed.

To qualify as a candidate, you must be:

  • High school seniors, college undergraduates and graduates pursuing a career in communications;
  • Have an overall GPA of 3.2 or better (or the high school equivalent of 87 or better);
  • Have a permanent residence in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut or Pennsylvania OR be a college student currently enrolled in a school located in the 5 boroughs of New York City;
  • Submit the required written essay and your official transcript which includes your Fall 2011 grades.
  • Submit two (no more) letters of recommendation, preferably on official letterhead, with the writer’s contact information.
    • Letter #1 must be from a teacher/professor/academic advisor (preferably in a communications field) and must be current.
    • Letter #2 can be from a teacher/professor/academic advisor, an employer, and/or an internship supervisor (preferably in a communications field) and must be current

      NOTE: If you are returning to school after a prolonged hiatus, both letters can be from employers (preferably an immediate supervisor and/or above) but must be current. Past scholarship winners may not reuse letters from previous years’ applications, although new letters can be from the same college professors/academic advisers for graduate and undergraduate students.

  • Graduate students applying and past scholarship winners who are reapplying must be NYWICI members in good standing.
  • Those entering college or graduate school or transferring will have to provide verification of acceptance for the 2012-2013 academic year to an accredited college/university in the U.S. If you have not received verification by the applicaiton deadline, you'll have to provide it as soon as possible, and no later than May 16.

The Process

1. As part of the process, each candidate must submit a resume, a written essay on a topic we provide, 2 letters of recommendation, and your official transcript which includes your Fall 2011 grades. All material is due, and transcripts must be postmarked, by January 27, 2012.

2. After evaluating the submissions, we'll conduct phone interviews with the top contenders.

3. Based on the phone interviews, we'll narrow the field once again and invite the semi-finalists to in-person interviews in New York City on Friday, March 9 or Monday, March 12, 2012. The in-person interviews are mandatory, and cannot be rescheduled or conducted via telephone or FaceTime, Skype or other online platform.

4. The finalists will be officially announced at our annual Matrix Awards at the Waldorf=Astoria in New York City. Presence at the event, on Monday, April 23, 2012, is a requirement of eligibility.
