Who We Are and What We Do! NYWICI began giving a small number of scholarships in the mid-1980s. As tuition costs rose and companies reduced on-the-job training, members of the NYWICI board realized they could fill an important role by providing tuition support and educational programs for young women planning to pursue a career in a communications field. Those who were executives in communications firms or departments also recognized that recruiting and retaining the best talent is crucial and that the opportunity to interact with a diverse group of prospective employees would benefit their companies. In 2000, to broaden its base of strength in providing scholarships, the NYWICI organization established the New York Women in Communications Foundation. The Foundation’s purpose is to support women who are just entering or are transitioning to the profession by offering two indispensable types of encouragement
The New York Women in Communication Foundation Scholarship Awards, which range in amount from $2,500 to $10,000, are given annually to young women to support college or graduate studies. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic excellence, need, and a demonstrated interest and involvement in communications. In addition to their very practical financial benefit, these scholarship awards from seasoned communications professionals also represent a highly meaningful imprimatur at the start of a career.
