RECIPIENTS OF THE NYWICI FOUNDATION 2006 SCHOLARSHIPS:

Ana Liss- Ana is a 20-year-old junior from Pittsford, New York.  She attends Ithaca College, where she majors in Journalism and minors in Italian. She is the recipient of the college’s Jessica Savitch Scholar award, given to students “who show academic and creative merit in communications.”  She has interned at various news stations (television and radio) and most recently co-anchored a weekly 30-minute newscast.

Kaitlyn Moore- Kaitlyn is a high school senior from Pawcatuck, Connecticut.  She will attend the University of Miami in the coming fall, where she plans to major in Broadcast Communications.  She is a member of the National Honor Society and has received the statewide Fox 61/WB20 Student News Award for “News Package excelling in sound, voice and video,”

Kimberly Last- Kimberly is currently a junior at Washington College in Maryland.  She has a double major in Political Science and American Studies.  She is the Editor-in-Chief of her school’s newspaper, tutors fellow students in academic writing, and has interned for Ad-Fax Marketing in New York for four years.  She is also a contributor to NYWICI Next; her pieces include “Student Spotlight” and “Top Women Journalists Set the Record Straight on Gender.”

Colleen Huysman­- Colleen is a graduating senior from Old Saybrook High School in Connecticut, where she serves as student council president.  She has been listed in Who’s Who among American high school students.  Her training to teach English as a Second Language, helping with the National Sports Festival for the Disabled, and numerous other community service projects demonstrate her strong commitment to volunteerism.  She ultimate goal is to become a foreign correspondent and “tell people the stories they’ve never heard and connect the world.”

Sheena Fisher- Sheena is a high school senior from Troy, New York.  In college, she hopes to study digital media and video editing.  She serves as the photographer for her school newspaper, attends a desktop publishing class and will graduate with an Advanced Regents Diploma.

Elizabeth VanDurne- Elizabeth is a high school senior from Oswego, New York.  She hopes to attend Ithaca College for their television-focused communications program.  Various classes have allowed to her to work as an audio engineer and segment producer, and she is currently interning at her local news channel.  She would ultimately love to work at a network television station in New York City.

Lauren Horn- Lauren is a high school student from Farmingdale, New York.  She currently serves as the Officer of Public Relations for her school’s National Honor Society as well as the Managing Editor for News of her school newspaper. She won a YM magazine essay contest and had the opportunity to interview American Idol contestants for the magazine’s entertainment editor; her article was published in the May 2004 issue. She is currently fighting to raise funds for her student newspaper, of which she is now editor-in-chief. 

Irene Razon- Irene attends Saint Dominic Academy in Jersey City, New Jersey.  She works with Lakas Diwa: Filipino Community Alliance of New Jersey.  At the age of 17, she also serves on the Board of Directors of a local nonprofit organization dedicated to cultivating community awareness of social issues and Filipino culture.  She hopes to continue her community involvement by studying communications as she begins college next year. 

Lindsay Adler- Lindsay is a Photojournalism and Political Science double major at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communication.  Her ideal job would be as a photographer for National Geographic because she feels it is “important for national media to understand other cultures.”  She has received numerous awards for her academic and extracurricular activities; most notably she was selected by her peers and professor to win the Jeff Licata award for photographic excellence, the first college freshman to receive the honor.

Olivia Ner- Olivia is currently a senior at Archbishop Molloy High School in Briarwood, New York.  She is well on her way to achieving her goal of being the first in her family to graduate from college; she was admitted early to Marymount Manhattan College, where she hopes to major in journalism.  Her extracurricular activities include the Model United Nations club, the student newspaper and tutoring English. 

Lauren Little- Lauren attends the Metropolitan Learning Center Interdistrict Magnet School in Windsor Locks, Connecticut.  She has been accepted to a number of universities for the fall semester and plans to major in Journalism and International Studies.  She has interned at the Yale Daily News and the Hartford Guardian and has participated in writing/journalism programs at New York University, Wesleyan, and a U.S. Department of State’s “Global Connections and Exchange Program” through which she traveled to Egypt to promote long-lasting ties with the Middle East. 

Tammy Tibbetts- Tammy is pursuing a double major in Journalism and Professional Writing at the College of New Jersey, as well as minors in Spanish and Women’s Gender Studies. She has interned for Jane and Seventeen magazines and has contributed to various online publications; most notably she is the founder and editor-in-chief of nywiciNEXT.  She is extremely grateful for the inspiration and vision she has received from NYWICI.

Jamie Tomczuk­- Jamie will enroll in the University of Pennsylvania in the fall of this year with a major in communications.  She has a long list of activities and awards to her credit, including the National Merit Scholarship, the Young Heroes Award, and the Philadelphia Diocesan Scholarship, which has allowed her to take free college courses at a local Catholic college or university.

Nancy Lan- Nancy is a sophomore at Drexel University, majoring in Communications.  She has consistently been a member of her school’s dean’s list and honor society, and participates in various public relations and marketing clubs at Drexel.  Born and raised in Elmhurst, New York, Lan’s “deep-seated love and appreciation for multiculturalism has led [her] to pursue a career in communications.”

Gina Aflalo- Gina is currently a sophomore at Long Island University, majoring in Electronic Media and Broadcasting.  She is a member of NYWICI and has worked with various television stations throughout New York and Connecticut.  She has done extensive work in television production, even working as a station manager at her school’s Television Center. 

Samantha Davis- Samantha is a Journalism major in Temple University’s honors program.  She is an editor of her college newspaper and has interned for the Lancaster Intelligencer Journal.  She has received four journalism awards from both her college and high school.  She believes that journalists are “the liaison[s] that connect people to the inspiring and change-provoking words of a story,” in the pursuit of social change. 

Alexis Taylor- A native of Philadelphia, Alexis now attends Howard University where she majors in Television Production.  After her graduation in May 2008, she hopes to work in children’s television.  She has worked in various television stations on campus and in her hometown.  She begins work at 6am on most days, spending her time filming and editing for both academic and community service projects, including the Philadelphia Life Stories documentary project for the city’s Asian Arts Initiative. 

Joanika Leblanc­- A Brooklyn native, Joanika is currently a junior at Loyola University in New Orleans.  Her scholarship application included an unforgettable essay about being “displaced” by Hurricane Katrina and the countless struggles she faced in the following months.  She has just recently been able to return to her school and communications studies in Louisiana, with a refreshed appreciation for her education.  


NYWICI Scholars Commended by Syracuse University

May 2, 2006—Two NYWICI Foundation scholarship winners were honored at the Annual Newhouse Awards Ceremony held at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications of Syracuse University. The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications is one of the top-ten ranked communications schools in the country and has 1,700 undergraduate students. The ceremony honors top-achieving students for their academic excellence in communications-related fields.

Lindsay Adler, 2006 NYWICI winner, won the Bertram J. Davis Scholar Award for her achievements in photography. Adler is a sophomore photography and political science dual major from Apalachin, N.Y. This award is given to one undergraduate student per year, and at the sophomore level, Lindsay received the honor. Her dream job is to become an advertising and fashion photographer.

Sharon Clott, 2005 NYWICI winner, won the Heather L. Fleischman Memorial Scholarship for her achievements in magazine journalism. Clott is a junior magazine journalism and communication and rhetorical studies dual major from Havertown, Penn. She was one of three women chosen to receive this scholarship, based on her demonstration of outstanding potential in journalism. Her dream job is to work at a magazine or book publisher that features art, design, and contemporary culture.

For both of the women awarded with honors, the dean of the school, Dean David Rubin, mentioned the NYWICI Foundation Scholarship as part of their previous accomplishments during the presentation of their awards.

Recent NYWICI scholarship winner Rima Abdelkader is honored, and featured in newspaper article!
Multi-time NYWICI Foundation scholarship winner, Rima Abdelkader graduated from Pace University, Magna Cum Laude, in May.  She delivered a powerful commencement speech and received the Trustee's award, the highest honor given to a Pace Graduate.   A Bay Terrace resident, community activist and volunteer, she is also the subject of a newspaper article in The Staten Island Advance.   Entitled "Daughter of Palestinians is a Trailblazer", it can be found at:
