PRESIDENT
Kristine Welker was named Vice President, Sales & Marketing for Hearst Magazines Digital Media on February 14, 2008. In this role, Welker oversees the digital sales and marketing departments and will help incorporate online media into Hearst’s print properties’ advertising offerings Prior to this, Welker was the founding Publisher of CosmoGIRL!, which launched in 1999. Welker was named Vice President in 2004. Since its launch, CosmoGIRL! has received many awards including Adweek’s 2003 Magazine “Hot List”, Ad Age’s 2003 “A List” and winner of AWNY’s “Good” Award for the magazine’s Born To Lead campaign for three consecutive years. Previously, Welker worked at Ladies Home Journal 1988-1999 where she held various positions in advertising, from Sales Manager to Ad Director. Prior to her publishing career she worked at Wells Rich Greene Advertising. Welker can be credited with growing CosmoGIRL! beyond the pages of the magazine through innovative initiatives including the annual “Born to Lead” awards, an event that recognizes young people and their accomplishments; the “Kiss of Approval” awards, which highlights the best in beauty, fashion and entertainment; the first-ever CosmoGIRL! “Born to Lead Design Search,” a joint project with the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology; and other brand extensions including the CosmoGIRL! Beach House experiential marketing tour, CosmoGIRL! Prom, and CG! Mobile Welker is a graduate of Marymount College in Tarrytown, NY and currently serves as Marymount Annual Fund Chair. Some of Welker’s other affiliations include being a member of the Cosmetic Executive Women’s Association, Advertising Women of New York, New York Women in Communications, and she is actively involved in the Fragrance Foundation’s Career Day. Welker also participates annually with P.E.N.C.I.L. (Public Education Needs Civic Involvement in Learning) in the Principal For A Day Program. Betsy Morgan is the Chief Executive Officer of The Huffington Post (www.huffingtonpost.com), a leading online news and opinion site. Founded in 2005, the site offers extensive coverage of politics, media, business, entertainment and living. Ms. Morgan joined The Huffington Post in October 2007 after ten years at CBS. Prior to joining The Huffington Post, Ms. Morgan was Senior Vice President for CBS Interactive and the General Manager of CBSNews.com, in charge of the network’s 24-hour broadband, on-demand news service. CBSNews.com is an industry-leading provider of advertiser-supported free broadband video, and under Betsy’s leadership its excellence was recognized with several prestigious industry awards. Prior to joining CBS Digital Media, Ms. Morgan was a Vice President of CBS News in charge of business development, digital media and other new television ventures. She began her career at CBS as the Head of the CBS Television Network's Strategic Management Group working in the Office of the Chairman and CEO of CBS. Ms. Morgan has worked for American Sky Broadcasting, News Corporation's venture into the U.S. direct satellite business. She also spent several years in investment banking at the North American Headquarters of Schroders in the Media and Entertainment Group. Ms. Morgan earned a MBA from Harvard Business School and a BA in Political Science and Economics from Colby College. Currently, she is the President of the New York Women in Communications Foundation. She is on the Board of Overseers for Colby College and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
Nancy comes from the worlds of advertising and magazine publishing, including a number of advertising agencies and 27 years at Time Inc. For TIME and Sports Illustrated she served in various executive promotion and public affairs roles, in which she directed advertising promotion, special events, the famous TIME international news tours for advertisers, industry conferences and corporate involvement in the arts. She was President, and then served professionally for two years as Executive Director, for Advertising Women of New York (AWNY) before going on her own.
A graduate of Wellesley College with a BA in Music, she has sat on the board of the American Advertising Federation (AAF), the American Symphony Orchestra, and The Dwelling Place, a women’s shelter in New York. Along with industry work, Nancy does occasional free-lance promotion projects under banner, Promotion Management. For NYWICI, of which she’s been a member since 1986, she has periodically been on the board as VP Finance since 1992, currently manages the content for the website and coordinates development for the Matrix Awards luncheons. She directed the establishment of the NYWICI Foundation in 2000, and also serves as its VP Finance.
Abrams has been a reporter and anchor for almost 30 years, most recently with WABC in New York, where she spent eighteen years. Prior to that, Abrams was with KRON in San Francisco and Turner Broadcasting in Atlanta, where she helped launch CNN.
An executive coach and best selling author, Ms. Blanke's last book, In My Wildest Dreams: Living the Life You Long For was published by Simon & Schuster in June, 1998. The book has appeared on Amazon.com's Best Selling Books list and the New York Times Business Best Seller List. Ms. Blanke was the sole guest on the Oprah Winfrey Show in October 1998 where she used concepts from her book to help empower audience members to live fulfilling lives. Ms. Blanke's first book, Taking Control of Your Life: The Secrets of Successful Enterprising Women, sold more than a half million copies. Currently, she's writing, Between Trapezes: Flying into Your Next Life to be published by Rodale next spring. Considered one of the finest motivational speakers in the country, she has delivered keynote addresses for many corporations and at events such as the "Global Summit of Women" in Taiwan, the "Decade to Democracy" conference in Budapest and Cornell University's symposium, "Contracting Out: Danger Signal for Working Women and Men" chaired by Betty Friedan. In addition to the Oprah Winfrey Show, Ms. Blanke has appeared on CNN, FNN, CNBC and Fox TV. Articles about Ms. Blanke and her company have appeared in Newsweek, Ladies' Home Journal, The Wall Street Journal, Redbook and Executive Female. Ms. Blanke was one of the youngest female senior vice presidents of Avon Products, Inc., where, in addition to her responsibilities as global head of corporate affairs, she motivated and inspired Avon's half million sales representatives to live the lives of their wildest dreams. A member of the Chairman's Executive Council, she led the re-positioning of Avon as the world's premier direct selling company for women and launched the widely acclaimed Avon Breast Cancer Awareness Crusade, which has raised more than $25 million for community outreach programs. Prior to joining Avon, Ms. Blanke was vice president of public relations for Allen & Dorward Advertising in New York where she managed the National Football League Properties account. Previously, Ms. Blanke held several executive positions at CBS, Inc. including manager of special promotions for the New York Yankees. Spotlighted in the New York Times and interviewed on numerous radio talk shows, Ms. Blanke was the only woman to hold a "front office" position in major league baseball.
Vice President
Barbara Brennan, vice president real estate, facilities planning and corporate initiatives for Lifetime Television, counts among her accomplishments the planning of the facilities expansion for this growing network at sites in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. She has 15 years of experience in operations, marketing and design and also partners with Lifetime’s human resources department, to develop employee programs that support their major corporate initiatives. Among these have been Stand Up Against Violence, Stop Breast Cancer for Life and The Lifetime Volunteer Corps. Ms. Brennan is a vice president on the NYWICI Foundation Board and past president of the organization. She is a member of the advisory board for Dress for Success New York and Encore’s outreach program to the elderly. Ms. Brennan has a B.S. from Syracuse University and a master’s degree in urban planning and design from M.I.T.
Ms. Buckley joined Tiffany & Co. in 1995. She was appointed director of publicity in 1997 and promoted to vice president in 2003. Over her 15-year career in the public relations field, she also held management positions at the Diamond Information Center, the communications agency for DeBeers, and at marketing and public relations firms such as Fleishman-Hillard, where she executed strategic communications programs for fashion, publishing and lifestyle clients. Ms. Buckley graduated from Colgate University with a Bachelor of Arts degree. An active participant in business affairs, Ms. Buckley is a member of the board of directors of the Jewelry Information Center and New York Women in Communications.
Catherine L. Carlozzi is a communications professional with nearly 30 years of experience in corporate, agency, and consulting environments. Her specialty is business-to-business communications and speechwriting. Her recent clients have included American Express Publishing, The Ayers Group, Deloitte, Donna Karan International, FORTUNE magazine, Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S., Microsoft, MONEY magazine, and Trilogy Software. Before establishing her writing/communications consulting business in 1991, Carlozzi was vice president and manager of special projects for Brown Boxenbaum, a full-service PR agency in New York City. She also served as associate national director of publications at Laventhol & Horwath, the former national CPA and consulting firm based in Philadelphia. Carlozzi was a regular contributor to The Journal of Accountancy from 1997-99. In addition to writing under her own byline, she has ghostwritten articles that have appeared in Strategy & Leadership, Across the Board, Public Relations Tactics, Public Relations Quarterly, Internal Communications Focus, and Broker World. An active member of NYWICI since 1992, she served on the organization’s board for six years, as vice president of membership and then programs, before moving to the foundation board in 2005. She cochaired the Matrix Program Committee from 1998-99 and went on to serve on the Matrix Committee as an adviser and as board liaison. Carlozzi received the Liz Hoover Award for outstanding service in 1999. She was honored by Bloomfield College in 2006 for her mentoring work with communications student, by the Montclair Art Museum in 2000 with its Directors Award, and by the YWCA of Montclair-North Essex in 1995 as one of "50 Women You Should Know." A graduate of the University of Wisconsin with a master's degree in English cum laude, Carlozzi taught in the university's undergraduate program. She received a bachelor’s degree in English from Denison University summa cum laude.
Senior Vice President
Allison Gollust was named Senior Vice President, NBC News Communications, in May, 2005, after serving as Vice President, NBC News Communications since 2002. In her role, Gollust serves as chief spokesperson for NBC News, and has oversight responsibility for communications at NBC’s 24-hour cable news channel, MSNBC. She oversees all internal and external communications for NBC News and its programming, including “Today,” “Nightly News with Brian Williams,” “Dateline” and “Meet the Press.” Most recently, Gollust successfully managed the strategic communications for the transition from Tom Brokaw to Brian Williams at “NBC Nightly News” in December 2004, the first anchor transition at an evening news broadcast in more than two decades. In addition, she was responsible for all internal and external communications around NBC’s highly successful “Democracy Plaza,” an interactive exhibition focused on citizenship and the American presidency, which also served as the backdrop for all of NBC’s cross-platform Election Night 2004 coverage. Gollust joined NBC News Communications in November 1998, as a senior publicist for America’s number-one-rated morning news program, “Today.” In her role she served as chief spokesperson for the broadcast, which celebrated its 50th anniversary during her tenure, as well as sole publicist and spokesperson for anchors Katie Couric and Matt Lauer. Prior to her tenure with “Today,” she was a publicist in NBC’s Corporate Communications division, where she oversaw corporate and philanthropic events, as well as handled internal communications. In that capacity, she worked closely with the network’s government relations, sales and marketing departments and developed strategic corporate events. Prior to coming to NBC, Gollust was the Director of Communications for Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids, based in Denver and New York City. Prior to that, she was a news anchor and producer for Jones Intercable in Denver. Gollust earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Broadcast News from the University of Colorado in Boulder. She resides in New York City with her husband and daughter.
Dana Hagendorf is the Vice President of Marketing for Audemars Piguet North America, one of the world’s oldest watch manufacturers never to have left the hands of its founding families. In this role, Dana manages the marketing, advertising, and public relations efforts for the United States and Canada. Prior to joining Audemars Piguet, Ms. Hagendorf established strong luxury brand experience in both the hospitality and automotive sectors. In her most recent position at St. Regis Hotels & Resorts, she served as the brand’s Senior Director of Marketing, developing the global marketing strategy for 12 St. Regis hotels worldwide. Dana was also instrumental in the openings of the San Francisco, Bora Bora, and Fort Lauderdale properties. Prior to St. Regis, Ms. Hagendorf was the Director of Marketing and Communications at BMW in New York City, where she had regional marketing and advertising responsibility for BMW cars and motorcycles, and executed the launch of the MINI Cooper. As a Global Marketing Manager at PricewaterhouseCoopers, Ms. Hagendorf’s team was responsible for creating the firm’s new global corporate identity during the company’s merger. Ms. Hagendorf earned an MBA from The Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and a BS with Honors from Cornell University. Currently, Dana lives in New York City and serves on the Board of the New York Women in Communications Foundation. She is also active with both City Harvest and Share Our Strength.
Editor-in-Chief
Schulz began her career as an editorial assistant at Redbook magazine, where she learned the ropes of magazine journalism under the entertainment and articles editors. She moved on to become an assistant editor at Good Housekeeping, continuing to assist editors while also writing frequently for the Profiles section. In 1997, Schulz moved into the teen market as an associate articles editor at YM magazine. She was promoted to senior articles editor in 1999, overseeing the articles department as well as assigning and editing features. She left the magazine in early 2000 to freelance for various magazines and websites; it was later that year that she returned to her on-staff role at CosmoGIRL!. Since becoming Editor-in-Chief, Schulz has brought several exclusive brand franchises to the magazine, including The 50 Best Colleges for CosmoGIRL!s (an annual booklet), CosmoGIRL! to Go (a bi-annual mini shopping magazine), and a celebrity-judged community-service contest called The CosmoGIRL! Cup. Schulz has also been recognized for her work in battling the epidemic of obesity and eating disorders, winning the 2003 Media Partnership Award from the National Eating Disorders Association and a 2005 "Do Something" Award from the National Alliance for Eating Disorders Awareness. Schulz is a graduate of Loyola College in Baltimore, MD. She currently lives in New York City.
Prior to joining the ARF, Streckfuss-Laura held several global marketing positions at Deloitte Consulting and Deloitte & Touche. As Global Marketing Manager of Advertising during Deloitte Consulting’s new brand launch, she oversaw the creation of the creative and media plans for the global advertising campaign. During her time as a Global Marketing Manager of e-Business, she directed the launch of Deloitte’s e-Learning business. Streckfuss-Laura also spent nine years at Arbitron, a media research company, in both sales and marketing positions. She led Arbitron’s marketing communications team and played a key role in the development and rollout of research services and software tools. Streckfuss-Laura has served on the Board of Directors for several organizations: She currently serves as a Director on the NYWICI Foundation Board. She also served as Vice President of the Board of Directors of Anchor Bolt Incorporated, a manufacturing company based in St. Louis; the ARF representative on the Board of Marketing Research Institute International (MRII); and as Vice President, Programs on the NYWICI Board.
As one of the primary architects behind the design of the first worldwide television network, Williams oversaw the construction of CNN’s New York Bureau at the World Trade Center prior to the launch of Cable News network (CNN) in 1980 and served as the channel’s principal anchor and Vice President in charge of the New York Bureau until 1989. She contributed to CNN’s award winning program lineup and played a major role in the network’s development, globalization and satellite trafficking system. She was a critical member of CNN’s political anchor team and oversaw the planning and operation of the network’s second largest bureau with responsibility for seven hours of original programming per day. In 1982, Williams was appointed Vice president, becoming one of the highest ranking female executives in American television. Williams was the first woman to win a national Emmy Award for anchoring an evening newscast during her tenure with NBC from 1989 – 1993. For NBC News, she also anchored Sunday Today, NBC News Special Reports, Yesterday Today & Tomorrow and NBC’s extended coverage of Desert Storm: War in the Gulf. Williams was a frequent anchor and correspondent for NBC Nightly News, Sunrise and The Today Show. Williams has anchored two unprecedented 10-hour live television specials on childbirth for the Discovery Health Channel. In the wake of the September 11th terrorist attacks, she wrote and hosted a 3-hour PBS special Reaching Out to Heal. She also hosted a companion program to Bill Moyers' On Our Own Terms, about death and dying, which aired in Fall 2000 on PBS. As host of hallmark’s weekly True North program on personal ethics, Williams earned the 2001 Gracie Allen Award and the 2001 Donald McGannon Ethics in media Award. Her 90-minute PBS special on alcoholism and addiction, Within Reach, along with her continuing work as a PBS contributing correspondent and anchor on Religion & Ethics Newsweekly have established Williams as a recognized commentator and reporter on broad issues of ethics. Prior to joining CNN in 1979, Williams was a reporter and anchor at WNBC-TV, the NBC flagship station in New York. As special assignment correspondent there, she covered the 1974 and 1978 senate elections and the 1976 Democratic Convention and presidential election. She joined WNBC in 1974. Williams went to WNBC from WPIX in New York where, at age 23, she served as executive producer of news programming. Previously she was executive producer at KSTP-TV in Minneapolis, Minnesota where she started her career as a reporter at age 18. Mary Alice Williams has made appearances on top-rated national television programs including Nightline, CNN’s Crossfire, The Tonight Show, The Tom Snyder Show and Murphy Brown. From 1993 to 1999 Williams was a Trustee of the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation. She has served as Broadcast Chair for Women in Communications and Mass Media Chair for the National Council of Women. She was also a member of the Board of trustees at Fordham University. She is currently a board member of the Women in Communications Foundation and an advisor to the Foundling Hospital. Williams was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She received a B.A. in English and Mass Communications from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. She is the mother of three daughters; Alice Ann born 1990 and twins Sara Mary and Laura Abigail born 1992.
NYWICI Student Affairs Liaison
Joan Cear is managing director and head of the consumer practice at G.S. Schwartz & Co. Inc., leading mid-sized, New York City public relations agency. Joan was previously president and owner of The Wachsman Cear Group, another New York-based PR agency that merged with G.S. Schwartz & Co. in 2001. At G.S. Schwartz & Co., Joan is responsible for strategic planning and public relations program development and implementation for a wide range of clients including Anheuser-Busch, UTStarcom, Cold-Eeze, Pressman Toy, eToys Direct, Magners Irish Cider, Walkerswood Caribbean Foods and others. Joan also has an integral role in the agency’s new business development. Joan’s previous agency, The Wachsman Cear Group, was founded in 1957 as David S. Wachsman Associates Inc. Joan acquired the firm from the founder in 1998. Prior to joining Wachsman Associates in 1990, Joan was a media relations specialist for Long Island Lighting Company. She is also a former print and broadcast journalist. Joan has served on the Student Affairs Committee for New York Women in Communications for more than five years. During this time, NYWICI Student Affairs has developed a separate student membership category and specific programs geared toward students; launched a student member email newsletter, NYWICINext; grown its NYWICI Foundation Scholarships to $100,000 in awards to 16 students and much more. In addition to her service to NYWICI, Joan is a member of the boards of directors of Educational Housing Services, Inc., Peninsula Counseling Center and New York SCORES. She also belongs to the Publicity Club of New York. Joan has a B.A. in communications from the State University of New York at Oswego.
Senior Account Executive G.S. Schwartz & Co.
Linda Krebs is a senior account executive at G.S. Schwartz & Co., one of the largest independent public relations and investor agencies in New York City. Linda helps to develop and implement publicity programs for a wide range of clients including but not limited to UTStarcom Personal Communications, Toy Industry Association, Pressman Toy, Walkerswood Caribbean Foods and The Intercollegiate Studies Institute. Linda was previously an account executive at Bridge Global Strategies, a midtown Manhattan public relations agency specializing in international PR. She was a member of Bridge’s founding team in 2004 and during her tenure was involved in all facets of the agency’s business development as well as developing and implementing strategic publicity programs for clients ranging from Condista (Spanish-language cable network aggregator), New York Pharma Forum Inc. (professional pharmaceutical association), and Nikko Hotels International (luxury chain). In 2005, she created, implemented and served as spokesperson for a cause-related marketing campaign sponsored by Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in Canada and pudding manufacturer Kozy Shack; launched a U.S. website and product line in the American market for Admiral Road Designs; performed media relations and assisted in the event planning for Grand Opening of SNBL CPC, Inc.; and served on crisis management team for a famous psychologist. In addition to her service as co-vice president of student affairs for NYWICI, she is an active member of the Public Relations Society of America’s New York Chapter (PRSA-NY). Linda received the PRSA chapter’s prestigious 2006 President’s Award for her contributions to the Chapter and the industry.
