NYWICI’s members-only Coaching Salon on Dec. 1 featured Maren Perry, an executive coach at Arden Coaching, who shared her wisdom on the difference between managers and leaders, and why becoming a leader is an important step in furthering one’s career and success. And for those who believe they are born followers, do not fret! Leadership can be an acquired skill!
- Your worth as a professional is made up of your content specific knowledge (or expertise) and your “being.” Your “being” is your personal brand. It’s all about how you represent yourself and interact with others.
- Relationships are incredibly important. As a leader, those who interact with you must know you, like you and trust you. This includes co-workers, the security guard and the delivery man. You never know who is listening or watching the respect you pay toward others!
- It’s all about enrollment. Connections don’t matter unless you’re engaged with them. To inspire others to do what you want them to, you must speak to them in their language. By understanding someone’s perceptions, wants and needs, you’ll find it easier to inspire them to join your cause. Maintain these relationships over time.
- Leaders lead from everywhere. Leaders declare a mission and then fulfill it. Leaders take responsibility and ownership. They don’t pass the blame or make excuses.
- You’re either growing or your dying. Competition is fierce and the world moves at a very quick pace. To lead, you must become comfortable being uncomfortable or the opportunities to succeed and grow will pass you by.
- There is no substitute for passion. If you’re not inspired, those who look to you for guidance won’t be inspired either. Love what you do!
